Murder, shipwrecks and celebrity: Prisoners on licence in the nineteenth century

Criminal ancestors can be amongst the most fascinating and documented people in our ancestry. Court records, newspapers and prison registers are just a few of the records. But did you know that there is a English/Welsh record set that contains the most detailed records that you are likely to find for any of your ancestors. The records of prisoners on licence at The National Archives (available on FindMyPast and Ancestry) include not just photographs and physical descriptions, but letters to and from family, reports by prison staff, pleas for clemency, records of punishment and many other records. This talk will explain how to find these records, when they might be found for your ancestor and will share some of the fascinating stories they contain.
