This course is designed to equip librarians and archivists with the skills and knowledge needed to assist family historians in their research. Working with Else Churchill, the genealogist at the Society of Genealogists, participants will gain an understanding of the genealogical community and resources. We will look at genealogical research methods and techniques, key resources and best practices for guiding visitors through historical records, archives and digital databases. The course will cover essential topics such as census records, civil registration, parish records and national and local history collections.
Attendees will also learn effective strategies for tackling genealogical problems, recommending useful sources and navigating common research challenges. By the end of the course, librarians and archivists will feel confident in supporting genealogists of all experience levels, enhancing the research experience for visitors and making their institutions more genealogy-friendly. Special attention will be given to how the Society of Genealogists can support you and family historians.
