Getting the Most From the Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum was established in March 1917, to be both a place of record and a memorial. The outcome of the First World War was still unknown at this point, but this initiative shows the devastating impact the conflict had on Britain, with the attendant need to document and make sense of it. As it became clear this had not been “the war to end all wars”, coverage has expanded to include other later conflicts to date. This makes it an ideal place to find out more about the experiences your ancestors – both military and civilian – would have had, especially during the world wars. Find out about IWM’s five sites, and how the collections are a treasure trove that can help you, both in person and online.
