Ever been elated to find a document relating to an elusive ancestor only to be thwarted by the old handwriting? We’ve all been there, right?
Each Club session will cover different tips and tricks for deciphering handwriting from various time periods. Together, under Caroline’s expert eye, you’ll work with fellow members to transcribe a real document, looking at letter forms and abbreviations and honing your palaeography techniques. Not only is this a great way to learn how to read old handwriting, it’s also a chance to learn about various genealogical documents – from parish to poor law records, school or estate documents and more.
This month we examine a petition to the Bishop re the sea causing damage, and a later grant of money to a wounded sailor, plus assist a member to read a 1789 marriage entry from the Christchurch register from Trichinopoly, Madras, India and decipher the initials on the back of a locket.
