 Angela Malin from Northamptonshire FHS will talk about:

  • Northants FHS and what it has to offer, including their wide range of memorial inscription publications covering over 225 parishes, resources on the Members’ Area of their website and their extensive knowledge of the area.  
  • The background to the historic administration of the county which will help you locate records.
  • Northamptonshire resources including local history societies, museums and other online sources for the county.

 Sarah Bridges from Northamptonshire Archives will talk about:

  • Parish Chest Project – a composite listing of all the poor law documents including settlement, removals, apprenticeships, bastardy, freemen and associated records.
  • Occupational resources specific to the county including the boot, shoe and leather trades industry.
  • WW1 Military Tribunal records – Northamptonshire being one of only a few counties where records survive.
  • Estate collections and manorial records and how they can help you with your research (Northamptonshire is known as the county of spires and squires).
  • Hospital and asylum records along with other special collections they hold.

Else Churchill from Society of Genealogists will talk about:

  • Resources held by the Society covering Northamptonshire.

We will also learn how A Vision of Britain Through Time and Victoria County History can help you to research in Northamptonshire.

Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions from the panel of speakers.

About the Speaker

Paula Aucott

Dr Paula Aucott is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Portsmouth, her research interests include historical Geographical Information Systems (GIS), historical land use and medieval landscapes. She has been working together with Humphrey Southall on the Great Britain Historical GIS project for over twenty years, and have been invited to present their research findings around the world. The main public interface to their work is the highly successful local history website A Vision of Britain through Time, which they continue to maintain and update.

Humphrey Southall

Humphrey Southall is a Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Portsmouth, he is an expert on the History of the North-South divide in Britain, gazetteers and geospatial ontologies and the role of travellers in the development of political life. Angela Malin is Chairman of Northamptonshire Family History Society and have been involved in family and local history for around 25 years. She volunteers at the local Archives and can happily spend hours gleaning information from historical documents.  https://www.northants-fhs.org/

Sarah Bridges

Sarah Bridges is Archives and Heritage Services Manager.  The Archives Service covers the whole of the ancient county Northamptonshire that is now split between local authorities of West Northamptonshire and North Northamptonshire Councils. Sarah has managed the service since 2002 and is passionate about the richness of its collections for research. Else Churchill

Else Churchill is the Genealogist at the Society of Genealogists in London. Formerly a professional genealogical librarian and researcher, Else has worked for the SoG since 1994. She is the Society’s subject lead, working across the organisation and runs the publishing programme. She was the recipient of the IHGS Julian Bickersteth Memorial Medal in 2023 for her exemplary contribution to family history studies.
