This three-part course introduces genealogists to the What Are the Odds? (WATO) tool at DNA Painter, taking participants from first principles through to more advanced techniques.
Session 1 focuses on building a strong foundation, including how to structure a WATO chart, enter DNA data, and test initial hypotheses using a worked example. Participants will then have the option to apply what they’ve learned using a guided exercise between sessions.
Session 2 is a short live Q&A session, offering support, troubleshooting, and the opportunity to discuss participant questions and charts.
Session 3 explores more advanced use of WATO, including how the underlying statistical model works, how to test alternative hypotheses, and how to use WATO to place DNA matches within a known tree. Practical tips, common pitfalls, and real-world examples are included throughout.

About the Speaker
Donna Rutherford
Donna Rutherford, a London-based Genetic Genealogist, blends New Zealand heritage with ancestral ties to England, Scotland, and Ireland. Her fascination with genealogy began in her teens, and in 2015, she took her first DNA test. Since 2017, Donna has shared her expertise internationally, demystifying DNA for audiences. As a Facebook group administrator, she guides others through DNA mysteries, encouraging them to learn more about using DNA in their own genealogy research. Donna specialises in solving tricky DNA cases such as unknown parentage, surprise results and foundlings.
