We’ll be joined in our virtual common room by John Harris, fourth-generation funeral director and Senior Partner at T. Cribb & Sons (est. 1881), for a fascinating discussion around the undertaking trade and its place in social history. Drawing on his own family’s long involvement in the profession, John will trace the changing role of the undertaker and explore what historic funeral customs and practices can reveal about the lives of our ancestors. He will also explore how the funeral profession has evolved and where the industry stands today.
This will be a fascinating discussion on how attitudes, customs and practices surrounding death and funerals have evolved over the years.

About the Speaker
Andrea Woodside
Andrea Woodside is a psychologist and bereavement practictitioner with over 30 years' experience in hospice care. She's particularly interested in how ritual helps people process loss. Andrea is a Trustee and tour guide at one of London's 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries and supports is the Collections Curator at the National Funeral Museum at T. Cribb & Sons'.
About the Speaker
John Harris
John Harris (whose daughters and nephews work with him) is the great grandson of Thomas Cribb, the founder of the business. He has worked with the family firm since the 1970s and is a founder member and past president of The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors. He graduated with a Masters Degree in ‘Death in Society’ from Reading University in October 2000 and regularly gives lectures throughout the country on funeral history.
