Professional Corner: Dealing with Perfectionism with Heather Evans

Perfectionism is deeply woven into genealogical research. The need to be thorough, accurate, and careful with evidence is what makes good genealogists great. But when the pursuit of perfection goes too far, it can become a hindrance, quietly undermining our work, and even our mental health.

When you are writing up a client report, have you ever found yourself trying to produce a piece of work that is absolutely flawless? Checking and proof-reading again… and again? In the clutches of your perfectionist tendencies, you add a full-stop here, a new paragraph there, then maybe change it back again?

In this one-hour Professional Corner discussion, we’ll explore how to strike a healthier balance between our perfectionist tendencies, the high standards demanded by genealogical research, and producing reports which satisfy our clients.

Together we’ll explore:

  • Practical ways to harness perfectionism to your advantage
  • How to maintain professional research standards without falling into the trap of unattainable perfection
  • How to recognise when excessive checking stops adding meaningful value

This session is designed as a supportive, peer-led discussion, giving the opportunity to share experiences, challenges, and strategies with colleagues who understand the realities of client work.

Because good genealogy is not about chasing impossible standards of perfection we set ourselves. It’s about delivering clear, well-reasoned research that genuinely helps our clients move forward, while also protecting ourselves -  our mental health and our professional boundaries.

If you’ve ever struggled with the pressure to write the perfect report, or knowing when to draw the line and accept a report is complete, this discussion will offer practical insight and reassurance from fellow professionals.

Join us for an honest and constructive conversation about maintaining quality, managing our perfectionist tendencies, and building a sustainable professional practice.
