Visit: The Royal Mail Archive

Join us at The Royal Mail Archive, at The Postal Museum, for a hands-on visit to explore your postal family history.

One of the archivists, who specialises in postal genealogy, will give an introduction to the archive and the records that might be useful for you. Then they will show you how to access the digitised and hardcopy records, and answer any questions you might have as your research progresses. In addition, you will be welcome to stay after the hour’s visit to continue your research independently at your own pace until 16:30.

The postal records in the archive cover all of the UK and, up until 1920 Ireland too, and are a rich resource for genealogists. The material you will see will include Appointment Books, pension records, Establishment Books and staff magazines. You will also be able to browse the reference library which covers a wide range of mainly British communications history, which gives some insight into how the Post Office shaped the working lives of past postal workers.

The Archive is on the first floor of The Postal Museum and is accessible by lift or the stairs. Please let us know if you have any access requirements that you would like us to be aware of. There is also a café in the Welcome Space.

We look forward to welcoming you. Please note, if you would like to visit the museum after your visit to the Archive, we recommend booking in advance to ensure you are able to ride the Mail Rail train at a time that suits you (this will be a separate ticket to your Archive visit).

Contact events@sog.org.uk if you have any questions, or wish to book for two or more people.
