This presentation will discuss many of the attributes of the Legacy Family Tree genealogical software, version 10.0 (Legacy) for those people who may be seeking a system that will help them organize their family history information.
Legacy is a robust software system that allows family historians to easily organize, track, preserve and share information about their ancestors. In addition to storing basic data about individuals and families, users can illustrate the information in many types of chart formats, create reports about people, families and whole family lines, and create heirloom family history books.
Legacy was developed beginning in 1995, by Millennia Corporation, with version 1.0 released in June 1997. The software has been modified and improved over the years resulting in version 10.0 being made available in June 2024. MyHeritage purchased Legacy's developer, Millennia Corporation, in 2017.
The program is Windows based only and does not have a version specifically designed for the Mac (iOS) operating system. Mac computers must have an emulator or Windows software installed in order to allow the program to open. The software can be used on an iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, and on Android devices, with the installation of related apps.
The program has been positively reviewed by users and programming experts over the years for its ease of use, multitude of features, detailed reports, media inclusion, and management and customer support. The software is fully integrated with the FamilySearch website of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but is equally a program usable by independent and non-affiliated family historians.
Besides English (Australian, Canadian, UK and USA versions) Legacy is also available in 15 languages: Afrikaans, Brazilian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Faroese, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish.
One of the most important benefits of Legacy is that IT IS FREE! That’s right – it costs nothing to download, test out and then use to your heart’s content. When you download and install the program, you get the full version with all the bells and whistles. Software improvements and updates come regularly.
We need to keep in mind that family tree software systems are not research tools in looking for ancestors, other than providing us with questions about people or gaps in data that might direct us to look for more information. They are meant to help us compile, organize, preserve and share the research that we have completed using a system that is readily accessible. Legacy meets all those objectives.

About the Speaker
Wayne Shepheard
Wayne Shepheard has pursued genealogical research for several decades, exploring families in North America, Europe and the United Kingdom. He is active in expanding interest in, and writing and speaking about natural phenomena and their impacts on people and communities. In addition to several dozen articles he has written for family history journals and magazines, Wayne has also published two books. Surviving Mother Nature’s Tests relates many of the situations observed in nature to the lives of families who experienced or endured them. Genealogy and the Little Ice Age deals with the physical parameters of the Little Ice Age (1300-1850), the effects climatic conditions of that period had on people and how the environmental situations influenced the broader society. He is a co-author of The Wreck of the Bay of Panama: 10 March 1891. Wayne writes regularly on his blog, Discover Genealogy (www.discovergenealogy.ca). Wayne lives in Langford, British Columbia, Canada.
