Telling your family’s story means knowing your characters but how can you understand the personalities, motivations, and emotions of your ancestors?
Psychohistory applies psychological methods to historical figures in order to better understand people from the past. Using two psychological frameworks - Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems and Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development - you’ll be able to create a scientifically-based profile of the ancestors whose stories you want to understand in depth.
Participants will gain a layman’s working knowledge of these two frameworks and will see each framework applied to a specific figure from the past in a way they can then duplicate with ancestors from their own family trees.

Doug Tattershall
Doug Tattershall is author of Genealogical Publications’ Storytelling for Genealogists: Turning Family Lineage into Family History. He first stepped into the dusty world of county courthouse vaults as a news clerk for a daily newspaper and first stepped into the world of narrative history with Belle Brezing: American Magdalene (Wind Publications), the true story of the Victorian madam who became a character in Gone With the Wind. He has worked as a professional genealogist since 2022 and lives in Lexington, Kentucky, where he serves as genealogist for the Lafayette Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
