Cowmen, Mole-Catchers and Horse-Hair Plaiters: Making Sense of Census Occupations with John Hanson

Some of our ancestors seem to go through all the census returns with the same occupation yet others seem to change from census to census – but did they really change job?  Did they have two jobs? What is that obscure occupation listed?

We will explore the changes in occupation recording over all the censuses and the 1939 Register and look at how to find out more about what people really did and maybe who they worked for or where they worked.

Have you got a really obscure occupation amongst your collection of ancestors that you want to know more about?

Whilst this talk will concentrate on census returns, the resources can still be used for other records, for example, baptisms, marriages etc.
