The Social History of Domestic Lighting with Adèle Emm

Today, we flick a switch for instant light. However, our poorer ancestors went to bed at dusk and arose with the dawn whilst the aristocracy in their grand houses had huge windows and hundreds of candles. This talk explains how domestic lighting impacted on our ancestors’ quality of life - the hearth, tallow candles, oil, gas and electricity plus the history of street lighting.

After this talk, you won’t look at a humble candle the same way again; it meant so much socially to our ancestors.
