Walking With Your Ancestors Workshop: Mapping Strategies for Genealogists with Sophie Kay

Get ready for All About That Place with this talk

If everything in your home should be either beautiful or useful then maps are a truly remarkable resource in giving us the best of both worlds! In this session, we’ll…

  • examine how maps can support robust research into historical communities and see how much we can – or should – trust the maps we use;
  • showcase the Outlier Method, a practical technique for visualising long-term behaviour of individuals, families and broader demographics within a local community;
  • demonstrate the Concentric Survey, a method for the thorough analysis of a historical map, used to generate structured research in archival collections.

We’ll also explore the practicalities of how to undertake historical mapping in your family history research – such as where to find historical maps; how to select an appropriate one; and methods for locating old addresses. Methods and resources will focus predominantly on 19th and early-20th century England although the techniques can be applied to any era or location for which a good map is available.
