The closely printed pages of each monthly issue of the Gentleman’s Magazine in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries provide a snapshot of Georgian and Victorian society. The rich, the aspiring, the ordinary, the eccentric all jostle for space alongside artisans, tradesmen, shopkeepers, clergy, criminals, paupers and beggars. Every column inch of print provides vital details for our family trees but also preserves precious insights into the everyday world of our ancestors, allowing us to glimpse the lives, aspirations, personalities and characters of our ancestors, and the communities they formed part of two centuries ago.
