Explore the roots of your dental ancestors!

During this presentation, John will be illustrating some of the means by which dental ancestors can be traced. The history of dentistry can be traced back to 5000 BCE, but the development and acceptance of modern dentistry as an occupation in its own right didn’t fully occur until the early Victorian era. Before modern dental education in the late 19th century, dentists themselves were categorised by their different backgrounds and approaches to patient care. In the United Kingdom, dentists were required to be registered on the UK Dental Register from 1879, although many practiced illegally and untrained for years following. John hopes to offer some key launch points for genealogists investigating their dentist ancestors.
