This is a collaboration between Society of Genealogists, Gloucestershire Heritage Hub and Gloucestershire Family History Society (GFHS). Join us to learn about family history resources for Gloucestershire.

Else Churchill from Society of Genealogists will talk about resources held by the Society covering Gloucestershire

Mia Bennett, Chair of GFHS, will showcase the resources at the GFHS Family History Centre and other online sources available for researching in Gloucestershire.  She will explore what GFHS has to offer to people researching Gloucestershire ancestors as well as researchers who are based in Gloucestershire and want to research anywhere in the world. https://gfhs.org.uk/

John Putney, Community Heritage Officer, will be focusing on the 'Treasures of Gloucestershire Archives'

We will also learn how A Vision of Britain Through Time  and Victoria County History can help you to research in Gloucestershire.

About the Speaker

John Putley

Born and bred in Gloucestershire, John has spent most of his life in the county. He has always been interested in all aspects of history and first entered the world of archives under The National Archives’ ‘Access to Archives’ project – 24 years ago. He has been at the archives ever since working primarily in the research room and outreach departments. Currently, he creates and presents monthly online presentations, undertakes evening talks for local history and other societies, hosts school and group visits, and represents the archives at external events. In addition, he is the archives representative on the Gloucestershire Local History Association and the Gloucestershire Family History Society committees. He has written numerous articles for county local history journals, is a published author and dabbles in historical reenactment.

Paula Aucott

Humphrey Southall is a Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Portsmouth, he is an expert on the History of the North-South divide in Britain, gazetteers and geospatial ontologies and the role of travellers in the development of political life. Dr Paula Aucott is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Portsmouth, her research interests include historical Geographical Information Systems (GIS), historical land use and medieval landscapes. They have been working together on the Great Britain Historical GIS project for over twenty years, and have been invited to present their research findings around the world. The main public interface to their work is the highly successful local history website A Vision of Britain through Time, which they continue to maintain and update.

Mia Bennett

Mia Bennett is a professional genealogist who specialises in DNA analysis for family history. She applies her analysis skills developed as a safety engineer to untangle all the clues provided within family history records and DNA results. She has been researching her family history for over 30 years and was previously a trustee of the Society of Genealogists. Mia is an Associate of AGRA. Mia gives talks on traditional genealogy and DNA both online and in person around the world. She is studying for a Higher Certificate in Genealogy at the IHGS and is an alumna of SLIG and GRIP institute courses in the USA. She is the chair of Gloucestershire FHS.

Else Churchill

Else Churchill is the Genealogist at the Society of Genealogists in London. Formerly a professional genealogical librarian and researcher, Else has worked for the SoG since 1994. She is the Society’s subject lead, working across the organisation and runs the publishing programme. She was the recipient of the IHGS Julian Bickersteth Memorial Medal in 2023 for her exemplary contribution to family history studies.
