Brompton Cemetery

Brompton Cemetery, which opened in 1840, is one of the Magnificent Seven Cemeteries of London. It contains over 206,000 burials, many being household names, and its 40 acres (16H) is listed Grade I in Historic England’s Register of Parks and Gardens. Additionally it is a Conservation Area and a designated site of nature conservation interest. All the cemetery buildings are Grade II* listed and the Great Circle and Colonnades at the centre are probably the country’s finest funerary architectural complex. Uniquely it is a nationalised cemetery and cared for by the Royal Parks. A major £6.2M refurbishment, mainly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, was completed in 2018. The aim of the Victorians was to create a garden cemetery that would be a serene and uplifting experience for visitors and this still holds true.
