Part of Victorian London Week, but now available to book separately
Highgate Cemetery, opened in 1839 and one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian cemeteries, is one of the most celebrated cemeteries in the world. The imposing entrance, with its two chapels, leads you into the courtyard. From there, up the steps into the West side of the cemetery, you take sinuous paths lined with impressive monuments, until you reach the Egyptian Avenue – a grade one listed monument. This was built into the hillside to make a memorable feature, as well as housing family vaults. Onwards, up to the Circle of Lebanon – location for many films, especially in the 1960s (Hammer House of Horror). Into the catacombs, the star feature of the guided tour, and then back down past the grave of prize-fighter Tom Sayers and then Michael Faraday… You can then visit the East side, with a map, to find Karl Marx, Jeremy Beadle and many others!
