Visit: The Port and River Archive & The Sainsbury Archive

The Sainsbury Archive documents the history of Sainsbury’s from its foundation in Drury Lane in 1869 to the present day, but also provides a unique record of the transformation that has occurred in retailing since the mid-19th century, and the impact of these changes on society.

The collection includes a large number of photographs and artefacts, and is particularly strong in the areas of product packaging, advertising and retail stores. However, the archive also includes key company records such as reports and accounts and press releases, as well as material relating to all aspects of the business, including head office operations, food supply, production and distribution, subsidiary companies and staff records.

The Port and River Archive, documents the creation and operation of London’s commercial docks, and later the establishment of the Port of London Authority in 1909, alongside management of the Thames for the last 200 years.

It features a wide range of items from minute books recording important company decisions, to staff books documenting the 1000s of people employed by London’s port, plans, maps and photographs, all aspects of London’s port history can be explored via the material.

The Sainsbury and Port and River Archives share a research and store space at London Museum Docklands, the visit will include a visit to the store alongside the Sainsbury Gallery. Visitors can enjoy the rest of the museum at their leisure.

At the end of the visit, there is then the London Museum Dockland to explore, there is a café on site for lunch.
